is it fine to burn old barn beams in a woodstove?

there was an old barn torn down a bit ago by our landlord and he gave us a lot of the beams/planks from it, and we've been using it for firewood. i think the barn is somewhere in between of 30-60 years old. so is it alright to do that? because the wood from it burns really hot for a really long time, which lead me to think that it was sealed with some type of oil-based product, but i'm not sure. is it safe? if not, why?

If its been treated, you could be building up a coating in your chimney or flue pipe that could catch fire. Burn a little of it outside on the ground, if its been treated you will smell it for sure. Also some types of old wood will cause a lot of sparks to be given off when burned, keep a fireplace screen closed in front of fire.
