Oil on Canvas Buddha Profile Painting (Indonesia)

Oil on Canvas Buddha Profile Painting (Indonesia)

This remarkable oil on canvas shows exceptional use of color, detail and brush strokes. Depicting Buddha's serene face, this piece of original art will make a gorgeous addition to any room.

Does anyone know much about Buddhism?

My sister is really into buddhism and i wanted to learn more and design a canvas for her.
can anyone tell me the language that buddha spoke and also translate 'life is beautiful' into that language.

The question about which language the Buddha spoke is much more difficult than it seems. India is a large and culturally very rich subcontinent, so there were a lot of different but related languages and dialects (and also several unrelated like the dravidian languages, but they are not that relevant in this context) belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages (English belongs to another branch of the Indo-European languages).

People used different languages or dialects not only depending on which region they lived in, but also depending on which social group they belonged to, so kings and priests had their language, princesses and nuns had theirs, middle class commoners like merchants and artisans had theirs, and so on.

The Buddha was born as the son of a (not very great and important) king in a region called Magadha, so he surely spoke both the Classical Sanskrit of the royalty and priests, the older Vedic Sanskrit of the Vedic texts, and the local common dialect Magadhi, and probably some other variants of the Indic languages and dialects.

The traditional Vedic religion was only propagated in Sanskrit, which was a highly inflected and complex language that was difficult to understand for common people. The Buddha, on the other hand, wanted his teachings to be understood also by the common people, so he almost surely spoke his teachings in Magadhi, and then encouraged his disciples to translate it to the local language when they travelled around India to spread the teachings.

Now the problem is, no texts where written down during the Buddhas time, so all the original texts we have are translations to other Indic languages and dialects.

Today we have original buddhist teachings preserved in four different Indic languages:

Classical Sanskrit (somewhat altered)
A literate derivate of Sanskrit called "Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit"
A commoners everyday dialect called Gandhari Prakrit
Another Prakrit close to Gandhari called Pali

Of these, the only complete Canon is preserved in Pali, which is based on a lower class dialect from the South-Western part of Central India. Great parts of the Canon, as well as many other important scriptures, are preserved in the three other more Sanskrit-like dialects from Northern and North-Western India.

For several reasons, Pali was for a long time the most favoured Buddhist language by the Western scholars, and traditionally it was even held that Pali, which is used by the Theravada Buddhists in South and South-East Asia, was the actual language of the Buddha. These reasons were mainly:
1. It was the only language where you could find the complete Canon (there were at least five different versions of the original Canon in different languages).
2. The Sanskrit scriptures were even fewer at that time, since many of them have been found later.
3. Theravada, which was represented in Pali, was by the scholars of old seen as the "original" Buddhism, whereas the Sanskrit texts were more fundamental to the different kinds of Mahayana Buddhism (the translations to Chinese and Tibetan were made from the Sanskrit version, not the Pali version. for example).
4. Sanskrit was more associated with Hinduism.

In short, you can't find the texts in the original language, Magadhi, but you can find it in several related Indic languages, like Sanskrit, Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit and Pali.

If you want your phrase in Sanskrit, I think these variants are right:

jiivanam sundaram – जीवनं सà¥à¤¨à¥à¤¦à¤°à¤®à¥
jiivanam shobhanam – जीवनं शोभनमà¥
jiivanam divyam – जीवनं दिवà¥à¤¯à¤®à¥
(from http://learnsanskrit.wordpress.com/about/ )

That said, if your sister is into Chinese Buddhism she might prefer it in Chinese, if she's into Tibetan Buddhism she might prefer it in Tibetan, if she's into Theravada Buddhism she will surely prefer it in Pali, and so on.
