Opinions on raw art /art brut? can these be judged as good pieces of art despite the lack of technical skills?
I believe art brut to be more interesting psychologically than artistically. Or they can have personal interests.
Art, from what I observe, is much like music. Rather than 'skill', it depends on what one likes/believes in or what one doesn't like/believe in.
Then again, what do you mean by 'technical skill' in art? Can one not "develop" it on his own? I think it is very much possible that some outsider artists show 'technical skill' without actually learning it. I refer to this not in a 'god-gift' kind of way but something that might have genetic origins. That's why I said that it is more interesting scientifically.
Majority of art brut that I've come across, though, seems nothing artistically educative, anyway. I tend to believe that it is more of a commercial activity than anything else. But then I haven't seen a lot of it, so I might be erring in my presumption.
However, the little that I have seen, I could connect with bits of psychology (rather than 'art'), hence my opinion.
Lastly, let's face it. Not all notable artists were 'absolutely sane and normal' by any stretch of imagination.
