An Introduction to Making Fused Glass

Fused glass is a procedure that involves fusing several small pieces of glass together to create a new piece of glass. Using this method you can obtain some outstanding effects.

With this method you can create all kind of decorative items such as home accessories or jewelry. This process is actually very complex and it requires glass fusing tools, supplies and a lot of patience. It is very easy to learn some basic things but it is extremely complicated and it can take years to learn everything about this process.

Fused Glass 101

The first thing you need to know is how to select the adequate type of glass. When heated, glass expands and contracts. When creating fused glass, it is very important to use glass that has the same Coefficient of Expansion. This means that the glass pieces will expand and contract at the same rate. Fused glass manufacturers use many glass pieces and cutting tools to produce a fused glass piece for a completed .

Then, the manufacturer will put the glass pieces together to obtain a beautiful design. Creativity plays a very important part at this stage. Some may keep their objects simple, using just a few glass layers and some basic geometric shapes while others use many glass layers and a lot of colors in order to create really complex designs.

After the piece is completed, the next step is to heat it in a kiln. This process requires some skills and originality. The finished design will be affected by the temperature used and the time it spends inside the kiln. A firing can take a few hours depending on the effect you want to obtain. There are artist that fuse their design with a hand torch because, this way they have more control over the final aspect of their design.

The last step is called annealing and it involves cooling down the fired glass to the room temperature. This is a slow procedure that can't be accelerated because if the glass is not correctly annealed it can break unexpectedly.

During the past few years fused glass art has got very popular thanks to the beauty of the colors that can be achieved using this method.

Glass Hand Blown Art

What makes Glass Hand Blown Art

If you need a great gift, then you should consider Hand Blown Glass Art tailored made by Lille Glassblowers. Lille Glassblowers has been creating one of a kind blown glass art in Smyrna Georgia in their glassblowing shop. Don Lillie is both an artist and the father of a family run business who makes hand blown glass art, and also makes sure the orders get processed in a timely fashion.Thom Lillie is the limitless son whose talents for creating gorgeous  glass designs is always evident in his efforts.Thom is always at the studio working on a new art piece, but somehow manages to create glass art that is unique.
Thom can be found on any day hurrying an order up so it can be shipped on time,  but he also could be found speaking with people who find themselves drawn to his studio.

Imagintive  Designs

Often, it is quite chaotic in the studio.
Blowtorches blaze as Don Lillie and Thom rush around to complete an order for a customer.
Don and Thom make amazing art glass which is extremely sought after by collectors.
I walked into the Lille shop one day and saw Don Lille speaking with the fire marshal of Smyrna. As I got closer, I could hear them speaking about a particular award for a brave firefighter who risked his life doing his duty.
The fire marshal and Don finally settle on an award that catches the essence of a brave firefighter, which was a fire axe.

Making Art from Glass

Making glass blown art is a challenge, when you must make sure to keep it spectacular, and keep you clients happy.
This is why often an "idea" ends up becoming a very different and tailored made figure.
Thom and Don must conform to making items for resale, in other words, pieces that are generally bought, but they still end up making lots of work that just satisfies their artistic juices.

Don and Thom can think up a sketch for somebody, and design it into a tremendous .
Often, Thom can use his dreams to flow into his glass artwork and create a masterpiece from a simple piece of glass.
Thom's background is in scientific glassblowing, which means that many of his sketches are not attempted by any other glassblowing artist.
Blowing glass bubbles is not what Thom does, but rather use very small pieces of glass, his breath and a blowtorch to create his masterpieces.
Scientific glassblowers often use their knowledge to make beakers or coiling, so that is what truly makes Thom distinctive because he uses his abilities to create glass works of art.
