Could someone please translate what Shakespeare's is saying?
Sentence by sentence please!?
Be kind and courteous to this gentle man;
Hop in his walks and gambol in his eyes;
Feed him with apricots and dewberries;
With purple grapes, green figs and mulberries.
The honey-bags steal from the humblebees;
And for the night tapers crop their waxen thighs;
And light them at the fiery glowworms eyes;
To have my love to bed and to arise;
And pluck the wings from painted butterflies;
To fan the moonbeams from his sleeping eyes;
Nod to him, elves, and do him courtesies.
These lines are spoken by Titania, queen of the fairies. Oberon has placed an enchantment on her, and she has fallen in love with the ... erm, donkey-headed Bottom (apparently, YA doesn't like Shakespeare's word for "donkey"). In this passage, Titania instructs her fairies to treat him well.
Be kind and courteous to this gentle man;
(I think that's clear.)
Hop in his walks and gambol in his eyes;
("gambol" means to jump or dance)
Feed him with apricots and dewberries;
With purple grapes, green figs and mulberries.
(Feed him sweet things)
The honey-bags steal from the humblebees;
(Take honey from the bumblebees)
And for the night tapers crop their waxen thighs;
(Take the bees' waxy legs for night-candles;)
And light them at the fiery glowworms eyes;
(Light the candles with the eyes of glow-worms;)
To have my love to bed and to arise;
(By the light of these candles, my love will come to my bed and "arise." That's a pun: "arise" means that Bottom will spend the night with her and also something else which YA probably wouldn't like -- I think you can figure it out.)
And pluck the wings from painted butterflies
To fan the moonbeams from his sleeping eyes;
Nod to him, elves and do him courtesies.
(I think this is clear.)
