Thoughts on SafeChoice by Nutrena for Horses?

I have a 14 year old appy that has heaves. He's been on SafeChoice now for a few weeks. My other 21 year old appaloosa has put on quite a bit of weight and he looks better since switching the feed. My 14 year old, though, has lost weight. I have him on a continuous wormer and spirulina for his heaves. The vet has checked his teeth and said they are fine. He finishes the SafeChoice every morning and night, and there is none left on the ground. What else do I need to get for him to put the weight back on? Is SafeChoice a good feed?

Try adding some beat pulp, this you can get at a feed store but makes sure you get the instructions, this must be soaked prior to feeding, it swells something like 2-3 times its original, bagged state.

Sounds like you know the rest but, water down his hay, make sure there is NO dust or mold. A good rule for all horse owners but yours is more sensitive to even plain "feild dust" that may be in the hay. He may be over exerting to breath properly???? I would also watch the legume hays and supplement his forage with a complete, forage type feed. If the quality of the hay is poor, safe choice won't do much for you. Hay looses a lot of its quality after 6 months "shelf" life.
