Giving my horse oil through a worming tube?
In my last question, I got a few answers that told me to give my horse some oil (corn or veggie) to help lubricate his insides.
I'm just wondering how i do that. I have a worming tube, it's clean though, never been used, and has no wormer in it. Can i administer the oil via the tube? Or is there a better way?
I know people who have done the tube when their horse coliced, it worked well. But will putting it in his grain make it less effective because it will be less condensed?
To lubricate the insides, one uses MINERAL oil. Vegetable oils add calories and are digested, they don't actually lubricate.
You need a lot to do any good (think quarts) so I don't think giving a worming tube or two of oil will do any good at all.
I also wouldn't give him oil because he MIGHT have ingested some fiber that MIGHT cause him some difficulty. I'd feel it was more likely my "cure" was going to hurt him. Either call the vet now and ask what to do, or wait until there are problems and then call the vet.
