How long will it take to potty train your 2 month old german shepard puppy?
I just got my german shepard puppy and he is so neat he obeys to everything and he loves me too.So how do i potty train this purebread pup?
First buy a suitable sized potty.
Warm its seat.
Then teach your puppy to sit on it.
Takes children from several weeks to several months to master the skill of filling it and of then standing up without tipping it over.
But far more sensible is to paper-train or house-train your pup.
Which I do on the first day my pup comes inside, and you should do the first day you have your pup.
Basically, it is a case of YOU (and the rest of your household) being observant enough to learn your pup's timing & signals. Every pup is an individual, but my expectation for an 8 weeks old pup is:
• 1 minute after waking up, and
• 3 minutes after a drink or meal
it will start doing anxious nose-down circling, trying to find a suitable spot.
THAT is when you pick him up and CARRY him to the designated toilet spot.
For paper training, that is a wad of old newspaper in a corner where no human treads in the dark.
For house-training that is a corner of the yard where children don't play.
You then stand there boringly silent WAITING for him to stop investigating everything. As soon as he piddles or poos you praise him, using his name plus the word that will eventually become a command - e.g., "Good boy Rastus toilet!" Then you reward him before bringing him back indoors..
Depending on how good a Boy Scout you are ("Be Prepared"!), the reward will probably be one of:
• Contact: pats, rubs between the front legs or on the croup or ear-bases.
• Game: ball-chase or tug-o-war.
• Tidbit: a salted peanut; a sliver of hard cheese or baked liver or crisped bacon or cooked hotdog.
Remember that a tidbit should be TINY, to give just a scent & taste, not to fill the pup's tum - you want him keen to earn another, and another.
DO NOT USE A CRATE FOR TOILET TRAINING. The other adviser told you how long that took her. Some YA people have admitted that their pup wasn't house-clean until it was 8 months old. Locking it in a crate is the surest way to force a healthy pup to overcome its natural instinct to get away from its nest before going toilet.
My youngest came inside 24/7 at 8-8½ weeks old when her last sibling went to its new owner, and she was promptly paper-trained and had the run of the house apart from the lounge & the spare bedroom (those doors were kept closed). No messes anywhere except the paper in the designated spot, or when running around outside with various older relatives. I also that day trained her that dogs are NOT allowed in my bed room. Although that door is never closed, on only about 5 mornings did I have to look in the passageway for the sock she had been unable to resist.
I did have to shut the toilet door for a few nights, after she discovered that the toilet roll UNROLLS! And it FIGHTS you when you try to run!
And then I had to shut the study door for a few nights after she decided that she could NOT resist the plastic used to make the connector in the tv aerial lead that used to run across the floor.
Pups need to be able to exercise any time they feel like it. And they need to be able to piddle/poo whenever they feel like it.
So they need to sleep in a roofed outside run that is at least 12 feet long between gate & raised sleeping box, or they need to have a papered floor they can use as a toilet - and be immediately reward-trained to use it.
And "german shepards" don't exist. Spelling & punctuation are important.
My breed was developed to HERD sheep in the German boundary patrolling manner, so its real name translates exactly as German Shepherd Dog, or GSD for short.

Don't ask your other GSD questions here, where irresponsible kids pretend to be experienced adults. Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group's Home page tells you which aspects they like to talk about, and how active they are. Most also let you post photos so that you can show your pet's progress.
