what is the difference between bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts for musical theater?
I am looking at colleges to transfer into for the future, and I'm real serious about going into musical theater (performing on stage, or for television), and I didn't know which was better for me.
Also for that, what college is known for it in California? I was looking at CSU Fullerton, UCLA, or CSU Northridge..
Please and thank you! :]
I am a BFA theatre student at the University of Memphis. If you want to be a performer you should get a BFA. Also, you want to transfer as soon as possible. In my department, it is set up so that is you miss the wrong class one semester it puts you behind a whole year. A BA will not exclude you from becoming an actress. As was said earlier, a BA focuses on the academic and a BFA focuses on actual performance. As long as you are working outside of your school in theatre, you will still get the experience.
I am not sure which school in CA is the best to attend for theatre, but I have some things you want to keep in mind.
1. Small acceptance size. The fewer the students the more attention and stage time you get.
2. Do they have a Master's program? MFA students are promissed roles and therefore BFA students get less time. However, you will learn a lot from more experienced students.
3. How many shows do they have on there season? More shows means more opportunity to learn.
4. How many of their shows are musicals? If you want to sing, you gotta sing.
5. Do they require you take any technical theatre courses? Trust me, you want to know what technicians are doing and why. Taking a few tech courses will make you better to work with.
Those are a few things to consider and there are many more, but I feel like that is a good starting place for anyone.
