Can American children go to South Korean public schools?
I worked as an ESL teacher in South Korea from 1997-2001. Now I'm married with 3 stepkids, and my husband and I are talking about moving to South Korea. We would really like the experience of living abroad. I know about the rigors of the Korean school system. But I think it would be a great experience for the kids to learn Korean through immersion. Tons of Korean children enter american schools knowing little to no English and get by just fine. Can we do it the other way around?
Of course they can!
Not only can they attend public schools but also the tuition and fees are almost free even for non-Korean citizens.
However, you(parents) should be registerd aliens with a proper visa status in Korea.
If your kids are less than 13, language barrier does not matter because kids will absorb other languages very quickly.
I know an Italian family living in South Korea and their 5 children go to local public school here in Korea.
The kids speak Korean perfectly even though they were born in Italy. (The younger you are, the easier you can learn other languages.)
To sum up, your children can attend Korean public schools unless you and your children are illegal residents.
Public elementary and junior high schools are almost free while international schools are freaking expensive.
I personally think it's a great idea to experience Korean schools for you kids especially they have Korean heritage.
