Is it better to sand paper a paneled wall before painting ?
I'm moving into a new house and there is one room with horrible 1970 wood paneling. Would the paint job be more effecient if I sand papered it first ? Would i use more coats of paint if i don't?
Well, that panelling needs to be properly cleaned first. Here's how to get the job done right:
1. Wash the wall with liquid TSP. You'll find this at your local home hardware store. TSP removes ALL grease and grime that will keep your paint from sticking. Use the liquid TSP instead of the powder as the powder is toxic, hard to mix and you have to rinse more than once. You don't even have to rinse the liquid TSP and it's biodegradeable and non-toxic. Let the walls dry properly.
2. Do you have those awful little lines going up and down? If so, you can get rid of them so that once you've painted, it will basically look as if your wall is drywall instead of horrible panelling. Fill in the lines with joint compound using a very small putty knife. Wipe off the excess on the panelling right away as you do each line. You can skip this if you don't mind the lines. If you're painting a very light color (white, cream, beige, soft pastels, etc., it won't really make a difference.
3. If you want to sand, you can, but I tell my clients to save themselves the hard work. You used to have to sand but that was before Bull's Eye 1-2-3 OIL BASED primer existed. Actually, any OIL-BASED primer will do the job... I just happen to like Bull's Eye 1-2-3.

4. Paint away to your heart's content! What's great about oil-based PRIMER is that you can then paint with LATEX or WATER-BASED paint. Yep! Although you can't paint latex paint over oil paint, you can and should paint latex over oil-based PRIMER. Hurrah!
Oh... depending on the color of the paint you'll be using, if it's a hard color to apply that needs more than 2 coats (reds, yellows, purples), you may want to consider having the primer tinted to match your paint. The person selling you the paint can easily tint your primer to match. This will allow you to just do 2 coats of paint, instead of 3 or 4 that some colors need.
