"Preening as an Adjective, can they do that?
I'm readin this article for class and the writer used the phrase, "...the movie is a blast crater of preening caricature and stupefying narrative ideas..." Now I know film critics are self-absorbed, bombastic leeches, but even this seems a bit extreme. His writing uses "preening" in such a way that I can not find the meaning in any dictionary. I've googled it as well. I know what preening is. I'm familiar with its noun and verb uses. But, as an adjective? What does it mean in this context?
By the way, the author's name is Michael Atkinson.
This is an awkward phrase, though preening CAN be used effectively as an adjective. It could mean that the actors were self-indulgent, self-centered, and two-dimensional in their performances, or that the characters they played were written as such. Either way, it's a bad review.
