How can I legally sail a boat across Lake Erie into Canada?
I am a United States citizen and want to sail my boat into the Canadian side of Lake Erie. How can I do so legally?
This wasn't easy to track down. Though I have entered by small boat it was some time ago. When you arrive by private boat, you call in ahead of your arrival. If you can't because you don't have a radio or phone, or can't predict your arrival time because you ran out of gas and the wind is dying, well, I guess you can't, but in that case you must call when you arrive, and don't anyone leave the boat until the customs guys have seen you, except to make the call.
I'll try to put this in as easy a form as I can.
Go to the Canada Border Services Agency site, then look for:
Non-Canadians
Information for Visitors and scroll down, way down, to:
Telephone Reporting Centres and then Private Boats
in there you will see that there's a publication "coming to Canada by small aircraft or recreational boat", and a phone number
If you also look in the A-Z index for the T section, then go to Telephone Reporting and then Site Marine. there's a long list of places listed by province you can call in from and wait for the customs guys at. Including Duffy's Tavern, wherever that is. I think that's where I'd want to call in from after a lake crossing.
Check carefully what you need in the way of ship's papers, remember you need a passport to go home again, and if you normally carry any firearms aboard as I know quite a few US boats do, leave those at home. Not worth the hassle of trying to bring them.
