Frueh held a position in the art department of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch which led to his drawing of the editorial page cartoons as well as theatrical caricatures. After a trip to Europe during which he became friends with Matisse and Braque, Frueh accepted a position at the New York newspaper The World where he drew cartoons and story illustrations. After a second trip to Europe in 1912, Frueh mounted a traveling exhibition which showed in Boston, St. Louis and in New York at Alfred Stieglitz' Photo-Session Gallery at 291 5th Ave. (Nov. 20 - Dec.12,1912). Steiglitz characterized Frueh's work in his magazine Camera Work as follows: "...his show afforded a refreshing relaxation, in its sympathetic humor, from the tensions of New York life. Frueh is to be congratulated for the delightful manner in which he has depicted his impressions of our entertainers, displaying a pictorial sense of line and color, an ability to seize the significant characters of each individual and emphasize them with a gentle if sometimes mordant iron."

From 1920 to 1921 Life magazine published a weekly drawing by Frueh of a leading character or performer in a current play. In 1925 he left The World and joined he fledgling New Yorker magazine. Frueh had two drawings in the first issue of the magazine and executed its second cover. His last drawing for the New Yorker was done in 1962 at the age of eight-one.

The 1922 publication of his portfolio Stage Folk,linoleum cuts of selected theater caricatures, met with great success. The forty-one caricatures represent work from 1907-1922. The small publishing house of Lieber and Lewis produced the volume, which sold in 1922 for $10.00. The linoleum blocks were cut by Frueh and printed on Japan paper which was mounted on a larger 18 x 12 inch backing paper. The edition was limited to 500 copies.

One of the greatest parts of art history is how it is used today.  Art history is taught by many art enthusiasts that want to teach about how art is not only what the artist was trying to portray, but also how you can interpret it as well.  It can really challenge your mind, and though you may know that a certain piece of art will be painted to represent the Spanish Civil War, you will be challenged to think of things like what was the artist thinking about as well when producing this piece of art, instead of all of the facts, but more about the feelings and emotions that are represented as well.

Art history is more than just pictures that artists have painted, drawn, or sculpted.  Most pieces of art do have a representation that the artist had in mind, but the greatest part of art, and studying it, is how you will evaluate a certain piece of art.  You may study a piece of art for an hour and form an opinion, then look at it from another’s point of view and form a completely different opinion.  This, evaluating, is what the greatest artists in the world would produce when creating wonderful pieces of art.  Try it for yourself and you shall find that one piece of art in art history may just be a little different than you originally thought.

The famous Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest artists and painters of all time.  He was a Spanish artist that painted, sculpted, and much more.  Most people know who he is and that he was an artist but what a lot of people fail to realize is that during the 20^th century, his era of expertise, he actually co-founded the Cubism movement and brought a whole new aspect to the world of art as artists knew it and changed how things were portrayed and developed into a whole new style of art.

Leonardo Da Vinci was another artist that changed the world forever.  He was an engineer, architect, and sculptor that produced many forms of art during the late 1400’s and into the 1500’s.  He was born in the Tuscan town of Vinci, and was the son of a lawyer.  He studied art for many years and had many inventions of his own such as his bicycle and his parachute but he was famously known for his painting, which was the Mona Lisa.  This portrait is still highly sought after by many today and remains just as popular, if not more, than it was during the time right after he painted it.  Da Vinci studied anatomy in order to make his portraits, which also made his portrait much more desirable.

These are only a few of the artists and paintings that changed the world.  They are great pieces of art and will continue to be for many years to come.  They have been around for many, many years and without a doubt, they are great milestones in history.

Some of the most famous artists in the world come from the Renaissance era.  The more popular artists from this time period are Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.  These artists were very creative and distinctive during the Renaissance Art period, and for that, most people still, in the 20^th century, are fairly familiar with these big names.

If you are looking to acquire any of these pieces of art from the Renaissance era, you will have some trouble finding any of the originals, though there are a lot of reproductions that are still of great quality, however, collectors are mostly looking for the original pieces of art.  Just about all pieces of art from the Renaissance era will come now with a hefty price tag.  The best places to find true originals of Renaissance Art are those at auctions and art exhibits all over the world.  The reason behind this is the simple fact that when you are considering purchasing one of these spectacular pieces of art, you will surely want to inspect it in person, or have it professionally appraised so that you can be sure of the authenticity.  If you just so happen to want to acquire pieces of art from the three Renaissance artists listed above, you will most likely pay top dollar because of their desirability among all art collectors in the world today.

If you are an art collector, or becoming an art collector, you should frequent as many of these art exhibits as possible so that you will have firsthand experience as to what you will want to try to acquire, and what you would rather just study.  There are many different types of art at these exhibits, and many different price tags to go along with these pieces of art.  All of the art at these exhibits is not for sale, however, as many collectors only attend to showcase their personal favorites with a booth set up to teach the specific style and culture that goes along with the art that they brought.

There are many people that attend these art exhibits that never actually own any single pieces of art, but rather study the many different styles thereof.  With this in mind, you shouldn’t feel awkward about attending one of these exhibits if you do not plan to become a collector because if you attend, you will find that many professors do the same and only study, firsthand, the many different styles, and discuss with artists about the many different cultures.  The art exhibit is solely that, and exhibit, meaning you can just look if that is what you should choose to do.

If you look at the many different art movements, you will notice that they all tend to end with “ism” such as cubism and postmodernism, many people will tend to refer to these movements as solely isms.  This is nothing more than the general term for art movements, only under a different name so if you hear any artists or historians referring to isms, then you will know what it is that they are referring to.

The terms, art movement, refer to visual art in how they were produced and the many different things that they would reference when trying to follow a specific goal or philosophy.  They also refer sometimes to literature and architecture.  With these broad subjects, artists could incorporate them into those different philosophies for the particular movement in which they were in.

Art movements brought on the art that we know today and the many different types.  If not for art movements, the different styles such as modern, contemporary, the Renaissance Art, and much more would be a complete unknown in today’s society, but with the art movements in place, there is a lot of diversity in the world of art, and how we know it.  With this, artists today tend to follow trend as to which type of movement that they want to follow and depict an image from that era.

There are many different types of art schools, and most offer either general subjects such as modern art, contemporary art, Renaissance art, and much more, or very precise subjects for those looking to dive in a little deeper to the subjects thereof.  It mainly has to do with personal preference and your personal plans as to your career, or just your passion in the art world as to which field of art you would want to target.

Depending on the school and all that it offers, some can be very affordable and some can be very expensive, depending on quality of the education offered.  Art schools will also offer scholarships just like regular colleges and universities but it will take extensive studies and research to achieve one of these scholarships, yet it CAN be done.

A career in art is very desirable for many people.  Most will either love it or hate it and you probably won’t know until you have dived in it for a little bit so it is highly advised that you take a smaller, less expensive art class just to simply see if it is the right subject for you or not but chances are, if you are interested in art whatsoever, you will love attending your favorite art schools.
