A friend of mine recently got a dog, ( a whippet ) then she found out that?

she could not take care of it due to a sudden illness so I am looking after the dog for the time being. Can anyone advise me on what sort of food I should be giving it and also how much excercise.

Although whippets are bred for racing, they are sprinters and do not need a lot of exercise. A mile walk in the morning, and the same in the evening should be sufficient. If you do have the opportunity, let it off the lead so that it can have a run.
As for feeding, a complete dry food is usually the best but check what your friend was feeding before you change.
If you feed dry, then make sure that the dog has plenty of water. It is often a good idea to soak the food before serving, since Whippets tend to gulp their food without chewing. If you soak, then make sure the dog has something hard to chew to strengthen the teeth.

is a Shetland Sheepdog a good dog to own?

I am very happily owned by 10 shelties!! I have 6 adults and 4 puppies. I breed, show in conformation, do obedience, rally, agility, and herding. I love them. Many people who have them will agree - they are not just pets, they are soul mates!!
A good brushing about once per week is all they need. Other than my show dogs (Honey, Aaron, Mooney, and Hope), I only bathe them about once every 6 months. The coat type that they have is course on the top layer and when they get muddy, when I let them dry, a good brushing will make them shiny and clean.
They come in many colors. Most people are familiar with the sable and white (brown and white) but there is also the tri color (black body with tan and white points), the bi-black (black and white - the origional color), and merle. (Merle just takes the dominate color - black in a tri or bi-black or brown in the sable) and merles - splotches - it.) You can find out lots at www.assa.org. Shelties were bred on the islands north of Scotland as an all round farm dog and herding dog. They have to be able to climb up and down rocky hills (this is where the agility comes in), herd sheep (and anything else that moves), warn the farmer (crofter) of strangers (barking) and keep birds from the garden and the fish catch (I have a female - Kisses - who herds airplanes across the yard).
They are bright, happy, loving, and loyal. They are shy of strangers so you will have to socialize (oh, darn - you have to go to the park, petsmart, and Brewster to get ice cream!!). If you have any more questions, I would be happy to help. I can also get you in touch with a breeder or sheltie rescue in your area if you would like.
And by the way... I live in the south and today it is 100 degrees... I will simply let them out to play in the evening when it is a bit cooler but since they are not left out 24/7 then there is really no problem with the heat. I have a friend who leaves his out to play in a secured area all night in the summer and they sleep in a room with the a/c in the day time.

My 1 year old Great Dane is home alone during the day - what can I do to avoid her tearing up stuff?

My great dane is home alone for most of the day as we work full time. We got her a dog companion so she doesn't feel so alone! Unfortunately, she still seems to feel abandonned. They stay in a 10 x 10 kennel in our garage! We can't leave the pillows in it as she will shred them to pieces! Recently we invested in some linoleum so they are not on the cement and she even managed to tear a huge hole in it!! What can I do to stop that?
We can not leave her outside all day as she will dig in the yard and even has dug out bushes and small trees. We play with her for 15 minutes or so in the morning before we leave! She has tore up any rug we put in there so far!

Don't spank your dog! I can't believe nobody else was annoyed by that answer. She is just trying to occupy herself. She also might have some separation anxiety because she LOVES YOU so much and it's hard for her when you are gone. The best bet would be to talk to your veterinarian, about things that are safe to be left with her when you are gone, etc. Don't give up on her either. If everyone gave their dog or cat away whenever a problem like this came up, then nobody would be able to keep their pet! The good news is that with age this will probably improve. In the meantime, getting there is the goal, and you can do it. Maybe she is just going to be like that, and you'll have to only leave things with her that you don't mind having destroyed. You can buy things cheap at Goodwill even, if it's the cost that worries you. Just don't give up on her.

A woman told me a story about having to put down her 3 year old dachshund because she found out it had a serious spinal disease and she couldn't afford the $6000 surgery to fix it. I have a dachshund myself, and before I adopted the 2 year old one I have now, I did the research. It was hard work but I trained my little wiener dog not to get on the furniture so that she won't jump off her hurt her delicate spine. But the woman told me that stairs are also bad for them and that is how her doxie ruined his back. I have stairs in my home and my dachshund follows me up and down them. So now I'm paranoid! Is this true? Are stairs hard on their spine too?

i had a dachsund for 6 years and she went up and down stairs and jumped on the furniture and everything didnt have a problem it was a uterin infection that killed her but she never had a problem with her back, but now i've had one for 3 years and one day he was running after a cat (he sneaks out the front door if your not watching lol) and he tripped or something and burst a disc in his back, so i guess it just depends on the dog and luck, but stairs shouldnt matter to much, maybe in 20 years but by then if theyre alive theyre back is the least of your worries
