Herbal Home Remedy: Mint

The mint is a herb that is commonly used in many personal care products as well as used as an ingredient in cooking. However, it also has many healing properties that make it an excellent herbal home remedy as well.

Funny Animal Pictures And Lessons Learned

Funny Animal Pictures: A Cat and a Canary Feather

My Animal Antics series of funny animal pictures began with my image of a cat with one yellow canary feather protruding from his smiling face. I originally created the image as a stock photo, but before I submitted it I was invited to exhibit at the Sausalito Art Festival (way back when it was unusual to be using Photoshop).

Someone had advised me to bring some un-matted 8x10 prints in addition to the larger matted and framed fine art prints. The first day of the festival I sold all 8 of the Cat & Canary prints. I went home that night and printed up a dozen more…and the next day I sold all of them.

Greeting Cards and Anthropomorphic Pets

I realized at that point that I had an image that really clicked with the public. As I thought about it, it occurred to me that perhaps the image should be a greeting card. I made an appointment with one of the art directors, Collette Kulak, at Portal Publications. I showed her a few of my anthropomorphic animal images, including, or course, the cat and the canary.

I then suggested that perhaps, with Portal's help, I could be the animal equivalent of Anne Geddes, who was enormously popular with her images of babies in flowers, pea pods and so forth. Kind of a bold statement in retrospect!

Exclusivity and Higher Royalty Rates

Collette, to my everlasting amazement, agreed with me! We started off with four images and added a few more each quarter. After about two years I was beginning to wonder if all the work I was putting into those images was worth it. Then suddenly one quarter I got a royalty check of about $6,000.00. After that things just took off.

The cards became so popular that Portal offered me a higher royalty to be exclusive with them, and soon I was Portal's best selling card artist. I held that position until Portal was purchased by a venture capital company and slowly carved up until nothing was left.

Funny Cats, Camaraderie, and Gratifying Work

I am now in the process of reviving the line with new distributors. The cards are doing well and I am excited to see a comeback taking shape. I thoroughly enjoy working with the pets and the process of creating funny cat photos and humorous dog images. I also enjoy the camaraderie of working with a team, something that rarely happens in my stock photography. One other aspect of this undertaking that is gratifying: I receive a ton of e-mail from people who just plain get a kick out of the cards.

Coffee Mugs, T-shirts and…Barbecue Aprons!

In addition, I am making these images available at CafePress for a variety of imprinted products including coffee mugs, mouse pads, T-shirts (for both people and pets), water bottles, and yes, barbecue aprons! This is all part of my process of diversification, of seeking out ways to reach as wide an audience as possible for existing images, images that I think of as income-producing assets.

Gift Books, Christmas Ornaments, and Lessons Learned

To date the Animal Antics pictures have been used (exclusive of CafePress) for figurines, picture frames, Christmas Ornaments, Gift books (printed in seven languages), checks, Purses and Tote Bags, Vet reminder cards, calendars, and, well, I can't even remember all the products! The gift books had a good run (Andrews McMeel published three of them), the greeting cards still sell like gangbusters, and everything else kind of fizzled after varying degrees of modest success. In all of these efforts I have learned a few things.

Get an Advance

I have learned that you should always get an advance (so when, if for whatever reason you don't get paid, at least you have something). An advance isn't just money in your pocket; it is an indication of the faith, and effort, that a publisher/distributor has in the product.

Not only that, but at least you have something if the client ends up running into their own financial problems…a lesson I learned all to well when I provided the images for a Calendar without requiring and advance. The calendars were printed and sold; the company changed hands, sold off its calendar division and disappeared. I pursued the matter briefly but realized it was going to probably require more legal fees and time than was worth the effort.

Take the Royalty

If you believe in your images and the product, and are offered a choice of royalties or a flat fee, take the royalties. If that original cat and canary image had been licensed through a stock agency as a greeting card I would have received several hundred dollars. With royalties I have earned over $6,000.00.

Be Stingy With Your Rights

I have learned that you should make sure that whoever is distributing the products has a good record for that kind of product. A company that is great at distributing greeting cards may be terrible at selling calendars. Do your research before giving up rights.

Explore Your Options

In the environment we photographers currently find ourselves in it is important to take the same kind of advice any good investment counselor would make: diversify. There are many ways to diversify and some of them might just end up being your main gig!

Gameplay

The game is also structured like Big Brain Academy in that puzzles are divided into four separate categories: Logic, Math, Visual, and Focus; the Xbox Live Arcade version, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii and Nintendo DS add a fifth category, Memory. The puzzles can be played at three difficulty levels, and more complex puzzles are unlocked through a player's progression through the game.

Many of the puzzles are similar to those from both Big Brain Academy and Brain Age. For example, Balance shows different objects on scales, and the player must determine from the relationships on the scales which is the heaviest object. In the Trout Route test, the player must follow a path based on the progressive numerical relationship given (ie. +2, -3, etc.) Travelling requires the player to memorize a route of arrows, while Ascending has the player determining the order of a group of objects from least to most in amount. Bouncing Ball has the player determining as quick as possible which ball bounces highest.

Game modes

The game features two modes:

Test: the difficulty level automatically adjusts throughout the game based on performance.

Free Training (Training Room on the XBLA version): Allows the player to select exercises of their choice at three available levels (Easy, Medium, Hard).

The XBLA, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS versions also feature additional modes:

Creative (available on PS3 with an add-on pack): A relaxing mode in which the player can doodle drawings or shoot fireworks.

Stress: A more stressful test mode than the basic Test mode, which adds distracting noises and visuals, such as forcing the player to do two disparate actions at once, or dealing with distracting images or insects on the screen.*Also on the Playstation 3.*

Kid mode (available on PS3 with an add-on pack): A multiplayer mode that allows younger players to play.

Personal coach: A user-selected AI coach that accompanies the player through various modes.

Brain charts: Detailed stats and graphs tracking past gameplay.

Multiplayer

The Nintendo DS version supports up to three player multiplayer via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, while the Xbox Live Arcade version features up to four player offline and online Xbox Live multiplayer, as well as online leaderboards. The mobile phone version also features an online leaderboard.

The mobile phone and iPod versions were very well received, including an 8.3/10 from IGN for the wireless version, which praised, "[the] majority of the puzzles are good and the production values are strong." Pocket Gamer raved about the iPod version in its 8 of 10 review, glowing, "It's almost a no-brainer to recommend Brain Challenge. It's enjoyable, invigorating and there's a remarkable amount [of gameplay] in it." iLounge's A- review of the iPod version also applauded, "It just as smart of an offering for this platform as Brain Age was for Nintendo."

IGN's review for the Nintendo DS version was less enthusiastic (7.5/10), but still singled out the Stress Test as an innovative twist to the brain exercise game formula, as was its review of the Xbox Live Arcade version (7.2/10), though it did mention, "There's quite a bit of depth to Brain Challenge...Making your way through Brain Challenge could take a very, very long time." DS Fanboy's review was more generous with an 8/10 review, and while calling it "an odd little game", it praised, "Lots of replay value, interesting unlockables, and loads of content make up for the title's flaws."

Team Xbox panned the Xbox Live Arcade version, saying, "It doesn take a whole lot of brain power to figure out that this is one title best left on the shelf," in its 4/10 review. GameSpot's negative review (5.5/10) stated, "...Only a handful of these stand-alone minigames resemble anything of interest."

Sequel

A sequel, Brain Challenge Vol. 2: Stress Management, was released by Gameloft for mobile phones in 2008. Another sequel, "Brain Challenge 3: Think Again!", was released by Gameloft for mobile, iPod Touch, iPhone in September 2009.

He Kunde (1925.4-2003), came from Xicong city, Sichuan province, China.

In 1946, joined the People's Liberation Army and worked in the Cultural Troupe of the No. 12 army crops.
In 1951 joined the Voluntary army, and went to North Korea to engaged in fine arts advocacy efforts.
In 1955 was admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts and studied in the training course of Soviet expert Maksimov's painting;
In 1957, acted as a fine art staff at the creation studio of the General Political Ministry of Culture.
In 1962, was transferred to the Chinese People's Revolution Military Museum to engaged in creating of Fine Arts.
In1980, He Kongde assumed the office of the deputy director of creation studio of the Military Museum and retired in 1987

Mr. He Kongde died in 2003, before death he was one of members and managing directors of Chinese Artists Association, as well as vice chairman of the Oil Painting Art Committee and national first grade artist.

Artist He Kongde is good at oil painting and watercolor painting. Oil Painting "Before the Attack" is collected by the China Art Gallery, oil painting "Military Commission Plenary Meeting" created with the cooperation of Gao Hong was awarded by the second prize on the 5th National Art Exhibition, and He Kongde had taken participated in the creation of half-landscape oil painting "Lukouchiao Fight"

A frequent question by many who are fairly new to deer hunting is "What scent should I use?" This is especially true for those who hunt in the post-rut season.

First, some background info - you can lump all scents into two classes:

1. scents that attract, and

2. scents that mask other smells

Attractants are scents like deer odor, sex or a food scent, like apple or acorn. You would normally only use sex scents like buck lure, doe estrous, etc. during the rut when they normally occur.

Masking scents attempt to reduce the scent of something else. A good example is the common cover scents you can buy in the spray bottles to spray your clothes, boots, pack, and other gear to kill the human and other smells.

However, there are other masking scents that are more natural to the environment. LL Rue, the renowned photographer, naturalist, and writer often used fox urine around his blind to help mask his own scent.

Scents like this are not alarming to the deer because they occur naturally and foxes tend to mark their areas all the time. Post Rut Deer Hunting

Here are a few other tips to help you with scents in the field:

- NEVER put attractants on your clothing or boots. Use a drag cloth, put a few drops of attractant on it and drag it behind you when you head to the blind.

- Put a few drops of attractant on a cloth or wick and hang it on a limb within shooting distance of your blind

- Use less than you think. A deer is very sensitive to odors and has been described as 100 times more sensitive than that of humans. Post Rut Deer Hunting

- Pay attention to your own smells - use good scent reduction methods such as soaps for you and your clothes, only wear your hunting clothes in the field and keep them in a bag or sealed container when not in use.

The only one I would use post-rut would be a normal deer scent or possibly a food - and that only if it occurs naturally in that area at that time. For example - an apple smell in late season in the North when the temps are in the teens and there is snow on ground is not too natural!

You can use scents for whitetail deer hunting in the post-rut period but do it very lightly and only use those that are natural to the area that time of year.
