One of the oldest forms of entertainment is clowns. In early times they were often invited to the palace of kings to entertain the guests. They were known as jester clowns. The History of Clowns

Almost everyone has had fun with a clown, from laughing at their stunts during the circus to having a balloon animal made for them at a birthday party, but most people don't realize the long and rich history of clowns.

Clowns started out as court jesters thousands of years ago. The first known account of a court jester was in 2500 BC in ancient Egypt. Records of court jesters found in China date back through the 1800s BC, and the majority of Native American tribes also had clowns.

It wasn't all fun and games. It's interesting to note that jesters were the only people allowed to disagree with rulers, and, through their humor, they were responsible for impacting many important rulings. In China, it was the court jester Yu Sze who managed to convince the emperor not to paint the Great Wall of China, a move that eventually saved thousands of lives. In the 16th century, clowns became a major part of theater, known as Commedia del Arte. Today, English Pantomime is derived from this form of theater.

Even William Shakespeare recognized the importance of clowns in his work, writing about two in some of his plays; he even tailored some of his writing to fit the clowns' personalities. It is believed that some of the scripts were even made up by clowns on the spot, perhaps the first roots of improvisational comedy, or "improv" as we know it today.

The first clowns appeared in the circus in the mid-18th century in England. Variations of some of the first circus clown acts are still being performed today. "Whiteface" clowns appeared soon after; a product of Joseph Grimaldi, the Father of Modern Clowning, these clowns are the most well known today.

A fun fact about clowns is that the notable character of American pop culture Uncle Sam is based on one! Dan Rice was possibly one of the most influential and highest paid clowns in history. A friend of Abraham Lincoln's, Dan was famous for his satire surrounding modern events, and was possibly a forefather of stand up comedians today.

Clowns have become so popular and such a staple of life over the decades that there's even clown colleges where folks can go study how to be a professional clown. Perhaps the most well known clown college, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College, located in Sarasota, Florida, formally trained thousands of clowns.

In modern years, clowns have become a mainstream staple of a child's birthday party. Part of the reason for this is the many great ways of entertaining young children a clown can have up his or her sleeve (literally.) They can create a funny animal or shape out of a balloon in seconds, they can paint a cute design on a child's face, and they can excite the crowd with any number of tricks, like a squirting flower or a handshake buzzer. They also engage almost everyone at the party, even the shyest of the group.

Slated from June to September, the Normandy region of France will celebrate one of the most relevant artistic movements in art history by offering a variety of cultural programs, exhibitions, and activities.

The Impressionist Festival was initiated under Laurent Fabius, President of the Roen, Elbeuf, Austreberthe Community (CRE), along with the regional governments of Upper and Lower Normandy, the counties of Seine-Maritime and Eure, as well as the cities of Rouen and Caen. While the interior of the pink rural farmhouse is unarguably impressive, the real beauty lays just outside. Spanning two and a half acres, the Jardins de Claude Monet is a welcoming respite, splashed with vibrantly hued flowers and sweet lingering aromas. One doesn't need to be an art aficionado to recognize the familiar specks of color and gleaming flecks of light— but for those who know Monet well — this is truly a profound experience. Cascading perennials, lush greenery, and of course, delicate water lilies scattered gracefully in the water garden, are among the highlights of this well-preserved sanctuary.

In celebration of the upcoming festival, the Musée des Impressionist de Giverny is showcasing Impressionism on the Seine: from Renoir and Monet to Matisse, an exhibition, which brings together approximately 50 paintings from both public and private collections, each which was painted along the banks of the Seine River. The collection is designed to retrace the history of Impressionism and post-Impressionism, from Eugène Boudin to Henri Matisse.

After perusing the gardens and masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley, we set out to follow the Route of the Impressionists in Rouen, a charming town situated between Paris and the Normandy coast. Once described by Pissarro as being just "as beautiful as Venice," Rouen is best known for having drawn the likes of landscape painters, serving as an instrumental landmark during the time of the Impressionists.

The Route of the Impressionists runs along the Seine Valley La Bouille, Sahurs et Bonsecours and highlights 22 key locations where such famous artists had once set up their easel and captured the landscape that lay ahead. The six tourist routes are scattered throughout Dieppe, Etretat, Le Havre, La Bouille, Rouen, and Giverny, and are marked with reading panels that describe which Impressionist painting was created at the site, and by whom.

After literally standing in the footsteps of some of the most influential artists of all time, we headed back to the city, checked into the medieval Hotel Bourgtheroulde, passed the burning grounds of Joan of Arc, and made our way to the Musée des Beaux Arts. With 100 masterpieces devoted to the city "of a thousand steeples," the Musée des Beaux Arts boasts the finest Impressionist collection in France, outside of Paris. In celebration of the festival, the museum presents: A City for Impressionism: Monet, Pissarro, and Gauguin in Rouen.

While Impressionist paintings hang on the white walls inside, the real spectacle occurred just outside its doors. On June 5, 1,250 participants clutched a recreated piece of Monet's La Cathédrale de Rouen, effet de soleil, fin de journée, and as they extended their arms towards the sky, the puzzle came into focus and was projected for all to see, covering a surface area of 600 square meters.

There is no denying that the much-anticipated Impressionist Festival has swept the streets of Upper and Lower Normandy. From museum exhibitions and carefully mapped routes along the Seine, to exclusive pre-fix "Impressionist menus" at local restaurants, the Impressionist Festival is one cultural event that is not to be missed.

This World Heritage Site with its virgin, swampy jungle and rocky mountains plunging into the ocean, is not only scenically spectacular, but also has a personal signiÞcance. Ward's mother is Japanese and her family originally came from this area;

'It's always about a primary experience and then coming back and not doing a topography, but making something surprising and revealing about the landscape,' he says. 'Contemplation is a very big part of the process.'The influences of this 25-year-old graduate of the Royal Academy Schools range from Sixties psychedelic graphic design to ancient Chinese paintings, as well as the latest Japanese animation techniques. Yet for all their phantasmagoric otherworldliness - one critic described them as a cross between Fantasia and The Land That Time Forgot - they are always based on the direct experience of a real place.

Then there's the physical quality of the paint itself: no shiny surfaces and quick-drying acrylic here, but juicy areas of oil paint that gives the work a direct physical immediacy that prevents it from tumbling into kitsch. Ward attaches great importance to technique and applies his paint in lush, sweeping brushstrokes that he's compared to the raking of gravel around the rocks in Zen gardens. 'I'm very interested in this idea of origin, and for me origin as a subject is very hard to pinpoint. Painting, because of its history, deals with origin very well. It's got this life to it that isn't apparent in a lot of other mediums'.While he's happy to have been singled out by Saatchi, 'it means I can carry on, which is a good thing.' How to Stretch a Canvas Painting

Painting Canvas guide to canvas stretching.

Buying a modern reproduction, pop art canvas or portrait of your family or pet online is now an easy and affordable alternative to commissioning a painting from an artist. Many websites sell hand painted oil paintings for a fraction of the price of the originals and having your photos painted on canvas is a much classier option than simply having them printed onto canvas using an industrial printer. However most sites send you your paintings unstretched and rolled up and you must have them stretched, either by a framer or by yourself.

This guide will show you how easy canvas stretching is and how with a few tools you can stretch your own canvas painting for the price of a few staples and some stretcher bars.

You will need:

1. Stretcher bars suited to your canvas size. Stretcher bars are available online or in any DIY store, if you would rather make your own we will be doing a ‘how to make canvas stretcher bars tutorial' at a later date.
2. A staple gun (you will need a proper stable gun, one you use for attaching post it notes to each other will be ineffective) or tacks and a hammer.
3. A solid pair of pliers (not essential but can help to get that canvas really tight.)

Before we get started lets go through a few tips that will help you to make a success of your canvas stretching experience.

1. Be generous with the canvas, if possible get your reproduction or portrait painting supplier to add at least 7cm of border around your painting, this will make things much easier when it comes time to stretch it.
2. A nice clean surface to work on is essential to make sure your painting remains undamaged and in great condition.
3. Two hands are better than one. – While you can stretch a canvas by yourself it definitely helps to have a friend lighted the load, especially the first time.

Okay here we go:

1 Put the stretcher bars together.

Take your 4 bars and slide them together so the joints fit snugly, check to make sure they are at a right angle by using a right angle tool or a protractor. If you need to, you can use a hammer to get the joints tight but be gentle you don't want to damage the wood. To make them extra secure use glue to fix them in place and even a staple or two.

2 Prepare your Canvas

Lay your painting face down on a clean flat surface (a wooden work surface is perfect) place the stretcher frame on top so the frame is resting on the outline of the painting.

3 Start Stretching

Choose any side and pull the canvas over the stretcher bar. In the centre of the canvas put a staple then one either side of the original staple about an inch apart.

4 Now...

Move to the opposite side of the frame and pull the canvas over the corresponding bar. Pull it tight and put three more staples in.

5 Diagonals are the way to go

Now move to the middle of one of the sides of your painting that has not yet been stretched. Pull the canvas over and put in three more staples.

6 Complete the Cross

Move to the final side, pull it tight and add three more staples. Now your canvas should be attached to your frame in the centre of all four sides. If it is uneven or loose now is the time to pull out your staples and pull the canvas tighter.

7 Finishing the Sides

Now go back to your original starting side, pull the canvas as tight as you can (using pliers, a friend or even a friend with pliers can help you pull it extra tight) and staple one staple two inches to the right or left of the original three staples then move to the opposite side of the canvas and opposite side of the centre (diagonally across the painting) and put in another staple. Now move to the third side and do the same. Keep moving across and diagonally around your painting so that no side has more than one extra staple than any of the others at any one time. Staples should be placed about two inches apart, but if it is your first time you might want them closer to make sure your painting is stretched evenly. Remember to pull your canvas tight every time you put in a staple, this will mean the difference between a well stretched canvas and one that will sag. 8 The corners.

When you get to the corners fold one side over the other as tight as you can so it forms a triangle then put staples through both layers. A neater alternative are ‘hospital corners' if you know how to do them.

9 Inspection.

Your pet portrait, reproduction or piece of pop art canvas should now be firmly stretched around your bars and ready to hang on the wall. If it isn't then pull out your staples and start again, it is better to take another ten minutes to stretch your painting that have to wait another month to reorder one you have ruined.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century composers were drawn to the city due to the patronage of the Habsburgs, and made Vienna the European capital of classical music. During the Baroque period, Slavic and Hungarian folk forms influenced Austrian music. Vienna's status began its rise as a cultural centre in the early 1500s, and was focused around instruments including the Lute. Geography

Vienna

River Danube

The Danube has its source near Donaueschingen in south-western Germany and flows through Austria before emptying into the Black Sea. It is the only major European river that flows eastwards, and its importance as an inland waterway has been enhanced by the completion in 1992 of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal in Bavaria, which connects the Rhine and Main rivers with the Danube and makes barge traffic from the North Sea to theBlack Sea possible.

The Alps

Three major ranges of the Alps - the Northern Calcareous Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Calcareous Alps - run west to east through Austria. The Central Alps are the largest and highest ranges in Austria. The Central Alps run from Tyrol to the Austria border. The Northern Calcareous Alps, which run from Vorarlberg through Tyrol into Salzburg along the German border and through Upper Austria and Lower Austria toward Vienna. At 3,797 m, Grobglockner is the highest mountain in Austria.

Bohemian Forest

The granite massif of the Bohemian Forest, a low mountain range with bare and windswept plateaus and a harsh climate, is located north of the Danube Valley and covers the remaining 10% of Austria's area. Notable is the Manhartsberg a granite ridge which separates Waldviertel from Weinviertel.

Climate

Austria has a temperate continental climate. Summers last from early June to mid-September and can be hot in some years and rainy in others. Day-time temperatures in July and August are around 25C (77F), but can often reach 35C (95F). Winters are cold in the lowlands and very harsh in the Alpine region with temperatures often dropping below -10C (14F).

Winters last from December to March (longer at higher altitudes). In the Alpine region large temperature fluctuations occur all year round and nights are chilly even in high summer. The northern Alps are generally a lot wetter than the rest of the country. The South East (Styria and Carinthia) is dry and sunny. The area aroundVienna often experiences strong easterly winds.

Tulips are so beautiful to look at. They come in different colours, shapes and designs. The Dutch love them and so does the rest of the world. But if you go back to 17th century tulips became a source of great speculative wealth creation. Prices rose by the hour to stupid heights. The prices were such that only the very rich could indulge in its trade. Then the bubble burst causing the ruin of many and a long depression in Dutch economy. In 70’s Hunt brothers manipulated/speculated in silver and raked in big profits. Their greed led them to large borrowings (100’s of million dollars) to finance their futures transactions. The bubble burst and they went bankrupt causing widespread economic disruption.

Is art market like tulips of yore? The question requires to be addressed specially for the newly baptised in the business of art collection. The size and the players in the market and the functioning of the art market have to be investigated to find an answer to it. Why this question is being raised now. Because a very short time back few cared about art and the art market was tiny. Mostly majority artists lived tight or in penury. There were seniors who had passed through the same mill of penury—Hussain included who painted cinema hoardings and made toys. Son of a very renowned artist D. D. Deolalikar who was Hussain’s first teacher would go around without money and his daily food was based on benevolence of someone in art fraternity. There is an art college named after Deolalikar in Indore! The son—he was always happy to paint. He had poetic expression in his paintings. He is no more God bless his soul. There was nothing to titillate.  Any way masses were not interested in poor bedraggled crankish artists. There was art, artists and art addict collectors. It was a small world of zealots.

But then India started arriving economically on the world scene. Cash registers/ credit card machines started working often and enough.  Prices started climbing and suddenly artists and art arrived, arrived because now art works were sold for tens of millions of rupees. A   new religion was born. It was exotic and sensual like the full bodied beauties on the last pages of newspapers. There is zing now. Arun Vadhera of Vadhera art gallery guesses Indian art market at about $350 million presently and expected to grow with economic growth.  New galleries, risqué dealers, media hype, and a lot of new artists make it more difficult to separate serious art. How there can not be drift wood afloat when the river is in spate? An artist along with some others was invited by a businessman to sign an exclusive contract to supply paintings. With great pride he told the gathering that he can sell anything! What would happen to those who buy from him. Unfortunately it is true in some cases. So there are tulip traders in 21st century also.

Choose your art at right prices

When you buy a standard product it has nearly a fixed price. But in art it is not so. An artist may be good or good for nothing. A good artist produces good works and bad works or not so good works at different times. Picasso’s paintings are not sold by square centimetre rate better and smaller works have higher prices than inferior bigger works. Collect good art and not the artists. It is a difficult proposition therefore to find good art at right prices. There are artists who have arrived at top price brackets. But to be at the top does not mean their prices are stable; they tumble as happened with some top names in Indian art recently. One must remember that in 1980’s and early 90’s the Japanese bought a lot of great art like Picassos, Van Gogh (paying then $82.5 million), Modigliani, Renoir etc. at mad prices and later as the Japanese economy speeded down hill plagued with losses and bankruptcies the works were sold at heavy losses. In contemporary art the high priced works may not protect you from losses when slide begins. The real manna is to choose good art (and artists) that has not ‘arrived’ in higher price brackets.  Therefore there is the need for fair eyed experts who do best what they can better than others. At what price a good work is bought will affect the financial return to the collector.

Second as an asset class art is unique. The owner of a particular work has a monopoly over it. Here I am not talking about limited edition prints.

An art work has a lower frequency of transactions. A painting may be brought to market after may be 5 years or 10 or 83 years as in the case of Jan Vermeer painting. (It sold for $30 million in 2004). Thus art is not a very liquid asset. As more and more quality art works enter museums availability of works in the market further goes down thereby pushing the prices through scarcity principle.

Let’s see the nature and structure of art market. Art market is of two types basically—primary and secondary.

The major participants of art market are 1.Artists 2.Galleries, dealers 3.auction houses 4.Collectors 5.investment banks and art Funds 6 Museums 7. Art fairs, 8, curators, art critics, art advisers, evaluators, restorers. 8 State.

 Artists are the fountain of the art market, and let’s be fair to admit that there are artists who have aesthetic, virgin imagination to impose new landmarks in creativity and there are those who do not have. Good art transcends the familiar. Art is not cerebral, it is celebration of timeless. It is the job of galleries, dealers and educated collectors in tandem with curators, art advisers, and art critics to cull wheat from the chaff in earnestness and honestly to position the good artists in the market place. To see what others pass by is their job. It requires poetic vision.

The State or Government has to be an important player by supporting art through state funding, state museums, art education, and art projects. Investment banks and art funds provide specialist services to collectors and advise them on art and artists. Art Funds issue units to the investors and manage portfolio of art assets. In India new laws for the safety of investors have slowed down the creation of Art Funds for the time being.

Market Friction and Inefficiencies

The structure of market alone will not determine the functioning of art markets. What is the state of competition and efficiency in price determination? About competition it has to be understood higher the price brackets fewer the competitors. In economics it is called oligopolistic competition. Presenting 2007 accounts William F. Ruprecht of Sotheby’s says, “And this is a business where your success is traditionally wed to a relatively small group of people who drive the business” Sotheby’s had $6 billion turnover in year 2007.

Mind it market is not able to value/price correctly all good art. Market inefficiency can be out of (a) nascent inability to judge art or (b) a conscious manipulation of the price mechanism.  The inability of the market to identify the visionary art of Van Gogh, Edgar Degas and Rembrandt was that they were rejected by the market. But you know how market treats their works now! So be a visionary leader to spot good art.

The conscious manipulation of prices is possible because as I said it is an oligopolistic market. Some dealers, collectors or even well heeled artists may bid high for a work in an auction because they have a high inventory of the said artists’ work. The bids help to create a higher bench mark for nearly all the works of the artist and as a corollary can also be used to take higher loans from banks using the artist’s works as collateral. Robert Hughes a great aesthete and art expert in his Art and Money says—

The art market can be set pitching and rolling by a single act, which is why it is so notoriously vulnerable to manipulation.  A ring of three of four promoters can bid up the price of a dubious young star painter at auction, and although the New York art world may know what’s going on, the collectors in Akron, Ohio, are not so likely to - all they see is the price, which was, after all, publicly bid and duly paid, and is henceforth true.

 Indian market is substantially unorganised and is not free from the follies I have talked above. There is lack of data and research and at times aesthetic knowledge. A lot of buying is presently seen in low priced art works most of which do not stand aesthetic scrutiny. There is a tendency in India for new collectors to go for low price bargain hunting which may be disastrous by creating a junk collection. In time such works will find no place in the annals of art. The books/articles being written on artists who have yet to prove their artistic worth are often shameless eulogies rather than a fair analysis of their art. The aim in many cases is merely to sell rather than uncover creativity alongside where it exists.

Supply of paintings/art work at least in primary markets is controlled by some galleries and artists selling direct from studios and in West by Art Funds also. Taking out a monopoly contract with artists specially the young and upcoming is getting commonplace to build up prices through scarcity principle.

The funny thing is the artist/dealer/ collector may sell the work for lower price but want it to be shown at higher price in the market. Auctions are the best way to do it, scrupulously or otherwise.

One has to guard against these follies if one wishes to be a serious art collector.

Art as social capital

Why buy art only with money making objective? We all pass on from life to another dimension and paintings/artworks can’t be forwarded there. Likes of Solomon Guggenheim and Mr Henry Clay Frick left their finest collections for the people of this world to enjoy in Guggenheim Museum and Frick Collection. Persons with smaller gold chests have been known to gift works to museums so that our cultural lineage and memory does not lead to amnesia for our great grand children. Art gives more than the joy of increased asset value; it makes life more meaningful and joyous. It opens new vistas in your life. But it is for earning profits that in India art will be bought now on. It is a virgin field for many to collect art. As the dust settles art will be collected not for media impacted artists but for substance. Substance will bring higher returns—worldly and other worldly in many instances. I hope likes of Ratan Tata, Ambani brothers, Mittals and their ilk will bequeath to future India its art history in the form of their art collections and museums. This will also provide an impetus for others to learn to gift works to the museums. Mumbai is a classic example of art philanthropy and Parsis have whole heartedly contributed to make life culturally rich. Jehangir Art Gallery created by Cowasji Jehangir is a glowing testimony of such a singing patrimony of the city. Kolkota has its landmark Birla Akedemy while in Delhi Jindals have created Stainless Steel Art Gallery, and in Gurgaon Anupam Poddar is planning a private museum of art to showcase his and his mother’s collection, more must come. It is not cultural poverty that we suffer from rather it is the absence of will to synergize the sweet petals of art in a beautiful rose.   

Like the ownership of designer houses and rare wines fished out of sunken old ships art collection makes a statement about the persona and social class identity of the owner. Emotional purchases or media hype induced collecting of art is likely to mislead the collectors and they end up buying for prices higher and suffer when prices decline to realistic levels. High brow art collecting showcases those who have made their millions and billions and have acquired a ticket to visible refined tastes in art and culture. But looking at the current go especially in U.S. the refined tastes come with a double question mark.

Can we arrive outside of immediate time to judge good art? From    inside the sea you can not see the flourishing landscapes on the land unless you are a clairvoyant. Many famous and high priced artists will be lost in terms of market and popularity while some of those who are not so well promoted/propagated will be ‘discovered’ in future. Art is a product of a contemporary society and to buy trendy art is always full of pot holes. The real worth of art work should last till contemporary vanishes into past. Art should not be treated as fashion changing by the minute. Internationally and in India I have seen many artists who were a rage vanish into oblivion. What better reason is needed to avoid collecting seasonal flowers!

Art is different as it needs not the faculty of understanding but feeling. In one of my exhibitions of abstracts quite a few persons asked why did I not put some object or figure to give a meaning to the painting. Problem is we expect familiar to be present in a work of art. Gustav Klimt was commissioned to do four murals for a new university—Aula in Austria in 1900. In those works he explored new dimensions away from his familiar style. But there was a scandal that the works were morally degrading and they were never exhibited. These masterpieces were lost when Nazis burnt Immendorf Castle in 1945. The murals were the basis for his emergent style but the society junked them. Art goes beyond the familiar and into nascent corner of our inner experiences. Hilla Rebay the American abstract painter says, "Painting, like music, has nothing to do with the reproduction of nature, nor interpretation of intellectual meanings. Whoever is able to feel the beauty of colors and forms has understood non-objective painting."

Culturally Indian art is more on the quieter side of creative search. Whereas western art and especially U.S. art revels in shock value, and the use of crass product-marketing culture to decimate the fine difference between commerce and art. Pickled cows and sharks, self portrait in own blood, artist canning his own shit, diamond studded platinum skull mould, or the Piss Christ photograph, ad infinitum can shock a society but can not last as abiding aesthetic creation. I think art here has less to do with communion with spirit rather it is the use media to create brand value through shock for the artist. We know media picks up more on sensational news and with instant communication it is easier to propagate an art work which sensationalizes. It brings in focus sensory rather than spiritual. In the year 2004 I visited Andy Warhol exhibition in Museum Kunst Palast Dussaeldorf. Looking at giant silk screen works sitting lonely in mega size halls, I realized the unitary influence of consumerism in American society and how Warhol through his art put a mirror to it. Mass takes away personal spaces and robotizes our responses to life. Unfortunately use of crass mass Pavlovian culture to decimate the fine difference between consumerism and art has also emerged. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami has turned art into a factory product marketed more like Wal-Mart turnovers. I am sure art will survive it for it is pedigreed to be different than the mass produced mass consumed products.

EASELS Artist Easel Review

There's nothing to beat an easel for keeping a painting in place while you're working on it. Working vertically at an easel means you're working in the same plane as the painting will finally be hung, reduces the risk of spilling anything on it, or dust collecting on it. You can work sitting on a stool or standing, though standing at an easel makes it easy to step back to see how the painting is progressing.
What Kind of Easel Should I Get?
The type of easel you get depends on the kind of painting you do the most. If you like working on large-scale canvases, then a table-top easel is unsuitable. Likewise, if you only ever work on a small scale, then a table-top easel may be more ideal than a floor-standing easel. If you enjoy standing to paint, then consider a floor-standing easel. Like most things, the price of easels varies, starting at inexpensive sketching and display easels, and ending at large-scale studio easels. If you're only just starting out, a table-top easel is probably the best (or sketching easel if you want to stand to paint). But if your heart is set on a floor-standing easel, don't compromise and buy something else. Rather save up for a bit longer.

If space is an issue these are great as they don't take up floor space and can be folded up. WALKER G. BUCKNER, JR.

Walker G. Buckner, Jr., earned degrees in law and business before beginning his study of art in 1977 at New York City's Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He is now a full-time professional artist, maintaining studios in Boston and Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Feeling a bit uncomfortable about describing his technique as he worked at Weir Farm, Buckner said, "It's hard to say very much about painting. The expression of painting is a communication without language. It should do its work without a lot of chatter. The important thing in looking at paintings is to be open so the unexpected and unfamiliar aren't shut out. It sometimes takes a long time to see what's happening in a picture."

Despite his words of caution, Buckner offered some insightful comments about his concerns as an artist: "Obviously, over time a painter acquires ways of solving problems. However, it also seems important to keep the process open, subject to accident and discovery. For me, the worst thing is to have a set way of going about it.

"I know I respond to light," he continued. "I'm concerned with the way outdoor light lands on objects, the way shadow shapes are formed, the way color sits inside shadows. Sunlight seems to hold objects in place, to slow time down, extend the moment; it gives objects a solidity.

"I try to abstract the subject into its strongest forms," Buckner went on to say. "Although I'm painting actual objects (chairs, boats, etc.), the painting process is one of transforming them. I think the pictures should be about paint, about light and shadow, about form and color. They're not about the narrative of the subject. I like having a color on the surface when I start to paint. I like a gritty, lively, rough surface of brushstrokes. I like pushing the paint around. If the image is weak, I like to let it dry and then attack it fresh, not fix it. I like to drag wet paint over dry paint. I sometimes let marks on earlier layers show through, sometimes obliterate them."

Buckner and Peggy Root (another Weir Farm outing participant) are the parents of small children and, for health reasons, have gotten into the habit of wearing disposable vinyl gloves while painting. At the farm, Buckner used both rough- and smooth-surfaced canvases primed with lead white oil paint. He worked with a combination of oils and alkyds, sometimes using Liquin alkyd medium to speed up their drying time.

"I've noticed that each of my paintings seems to have a kind of color harmony particular to it," the artist observed. "This seems to be important to me. The color relationships are something I feel. I have no conscious rules."

THOMAS S. BUECHNER

The cover story on Thomas S. Buechner that appeared in the October 1992 issue of American Artist gave a detailed description of the artist's palette of fast-drying alkyd colors and the lightweight Multimedia Art-board on which he paints. He brought those supplies with him to Weir Farm in the minivan that often serves as his mobile studio. On the chilly first morning of the outing, Buechner was found standing under the rear hatch door of the van, listening to opera music through the car stereo, drinking coffee from a thermos, holding a brush in a hand covered with a fingerless glove, and painting a view of the Weir studio.

He uses the resin-based alkyd paints because they dry more quickly than oils and become impervious to solvents once they are dry. These characteristics are a real advantage for an artist who wants to avoid the muddy colors that can develop when applying layers of slow-drying oils. In addition, alkyds make it easier for Buechner to pack up paintings and travel to new locations; an alkyd painting normally dries completely within twenty-four hours while an oil painting can remain wet for days.

As the former director of both The Brooklyn Museum in New York City and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, Buechner is well informed about landscape painting. He offered these comments about the experience of painting at Weir Farm:

"Being interested in all kinds of techniques, I originally saw this outing as a chance to leave my own predilection for strong light and shade to investigate Weir's late, pale palette. But it was no use. This strange place, so long an artist's place, is a haunting anachronism. The stone walls, once laboriously built to enclose, no longer have gates; the entrance to the carriage house is blocked by a tree, and another tree prevents light from entering the studio window. These subjects seemed so poignant I found myself abandoning a deliberate technical approach and simply trying to convey the passage of time as I saw it here."

GERARD DOUDERA

Gerard Doudera is the first painter to have been designated a visiting artist at Weir Farm (photographer Gretchen Garner was the 1991-1992 visiting artist). As such, he has been able to use the facilities there while painting the landscape.

Doudera, a professor emeritus of art at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, is well known throughout New England for his large paintings of ponds, wooded fields, and figures. "He seems to revel in the seductive power of nature which he presents to us like a delectable feast," wrote art historian Joyce Brodsky in the catalog for a 1990 retrospective exhibition of Doudera's work at the university's William Benton Museum of Art. "Doudera's strength lies in his refusal to be sentimental about the natural world, but to see it as that source of nourishment that feeds the sensuous parts of our nature."

During the Weir Farm outing, the artist said he often works on large canvases when painting outdoors because he "likes being surrounded by canvas" and because he "finds it easier to develop a sense of deep space in a painting that's large." But the large scale forces him to take steps to keep the canvas from becoming a sail that carries his painting supplies away in the gusting wind. He must also prevent the sunlight from filtering through it and distorting his view of the developing picture. "I sometimes have to nail my canvas to a tree or anchor the easel with tent stakes and wires," Doudera explained. There was only a slight wind blowing on the days of the outing, so a heavy rock placed in the metal tray of his French easel was enough to secure it.

The palette he used at Weir Farm included titanium white, viridian, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium red deep, cadmium red light, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, raw sienna, and Naples yellow. It took Doudera several days to complete his large painting, but his considerable experience in working outdoors helped him adjust to the changing conditions.
