Paper Navigational Charts Are a Boaters Must For Safety

This article explores the necessity of a failsafe backup to electronic navigation: traditional NOAA navigational charts.

In this day-and-age you can easily insulate yourself in false sense of security: passwords for emails and bank accounts, OnStar, Mapqwest, GPS in your car or on your boat. But the wonders of today's technology, while convenient, can have occasion to fail.

When it comes to boating, a false sense of security can lead to trouble at sea. "Collisions account for 80% of all reportable recreational boating accidents and 78% of non-reportable accidents, totaling an estimated insurance loss of over $450 million a year from nearly 100,000 claims," says a 2007 Hydrographic Services Review Panel report. "A major cause of claims is 'striking a submerged object' and groundings, two scenarios in which accurate NOAA surveys and charts can play a major role."

With electrical or battery failure a possibility, and only a small percentage of boats with backup power sources, relying solely on GPS or a chartplotter can be risky. It goes back to an old sailing rule: "Don't rely on one method of navigation." Richard Sillcox, NOAA's chief of Chart Update Service adds, "Technology is not foolproof, and unforeseen circumstances may affect your ability to take advantage of that technology." Among serious mariners, the consensus is always this: never rely on only one means of navigation.

The solution? Printed navigational charts. In comparison to the flash and interface of a digital-age navigation solution, a chart may be considered by some as an antique, but in the inopportune moment, when the batteries fail, it's the chart that will get you to safety.

That's not to say navigational charts have not entered the 21st century. At present NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) and the U.S. Coast Guard have established consistent methods of gathering cartographic data and uploading it to servers at OceanGrafix, an on-demand navigational chart printer. These daily updates allow every Ocean Grafix print-on-demand (POD) navigational chart to be 100% up to date at the time of printing.

NOAA charts include topographical information such as water depths, height of land, natural features of the seabed, details of the coastline, navigational hazards, and information on tides and man made structures.

This need-to-know-information can be yours by making sure your boat is equipped with an up-to-date navigational chart. Charts are an excellent complement to any digital/electric navigational tool. As electronic screens tend to be small and can be unreadable in bright sunlight, a chart is always readable. And the large format of a chart allows you to see the big picture and detail that would perhaps be lost on small digital screens.

NOAA lithographic charts are considered the standard when it comes to paper charts. They are the final product of NOAA's expert cartographers who collect, interpret and then apply critical chart corrections on an ongoing basis. Unlike electronics, which require boaters to pan out and zoom in, paper charts always provide the "big" picture. "Anytime you zoom in, you've lost the relationship with other parts of the chart," says Richard Sillcox, NOAA's chief of Chart Update Service. "With paper charts, you can easily see those relationships."

Another plus for having updated paper navigational charts is that electronic chart products may contain outdated NOAA data, depending upon when the cartridge or software was purchased and whether the boater has gotten the data updated.

Many recreational mariners are wary of the reliability of electronics. "Any part of electronic navigation can - and will - fail," says Jeff Siegel, a BoatU.S. member in Maine. "Failures usually happen at the worst, most inopportune time. Redundancy of electronics is helpful, but 99% of all boaters don't have any electronic backup for the failure of the GPS system. Paper charts are the ultimate backup to electronics."

In short, navigational charts are a fail-safe backup to electronic systems and in general offer the big picture when it comes to navigating. When you add in the up-to-date-at-time-of-printing features of OceanGrafix POD charts, you have the best of both worlds.

Shopping for Antiques in Paris

One of the most exciting things you can bring home to remind you of your trip to Paris is a piece of French history, whether it's a console table, an example of Art Deco pottery, or a 19th century lithograph or book. Paris has a large number of interesting antique shopping districts.

Rue du Faubourg St Honore

Le Marais

This trendy neighborhood in eastern Paris centers around the magnificent 15th century Place des Vosges. Along the square and in the streets leading from it are a number of eclectic and interesting antique shops. Here you'll find lithographs, leather-bound volumes, hotel silver, linens, and other smaller items. There are also some excellent art galleries along the Place des Vosges arcade.

The Flea Market at St. Ouen

The oldest and best known of Paris' flea markets, St. Ouen is a collection of over 2000 merchant stalls, divided into specialties, such as furniture, glass, Art Deco, and such. The 15-acre market is located north of the city center, a short walk from the Porte-de-Cligancourt Metro station. There is a little bit of everything here, from inexpensive baubles to elegant furniture. The market here is particularly known for its Second Empire pieces.

Drouot-Richelieu Auction House

For serious collectors, a trip to the great Paris auction house of Drouot-Richelieu, located off of the Boulevard Haussmann near the St. Lazare station, is a must. The proceedings are fast-paced and in French so if your command of the language isn't the best, it's wise to bring along a French friend or acquaintance. This venerable auction house, opened in 1858, is lesser-known, but of the same caliber as Christie's in New York and Sotheby's in London.

Shipping, the VAT, and Customs

In order to export a French antique, you'll need to obtain a certificate of authenticity for any object older than 20 years. In addition, keep in mind these tips about shipping, taxes, and customs.
– Shipping. An important factor to consider is shipping when shopping for larger antiques. Most of the larger (expensive) stores can arrange shipping for you and can quote prices. With items such as furniture, you generally have the option of filling a single container or waiting until the store can combine enough items bound for the US to fill a shipping container. Sharing a container is almost always less expensive.
– VAT. The VAT (called the TVA in France) is a tax imposed on most goods and services sold in European Union countries. Non-EU residents staying in France less than six months are entitled to a refund of this tax if they spend at least 1,200 French Francs (approximately 183 euros) in one store in one day. Most stores carry the necessary form. You simply complete the form and drop it at the airport when you leave the country. Your refund, which varies from 13 to 19.6 percent, will be credited to your credit card or mailed to you in approximately three months.
– Customs. Authentic antiques, original art, and books are exempt from U.S. custom taxes. To avoid paying duty, you'll need a certificate of authenticity from the dealer for any item over 100 years old and/or worth more than 1,000,000 French Francs (approximately 152,449 euros).

Conquer Stress and Beat Panic Attacks with Natural Anxiety Relief

If you're hoping to take charge of anxious thoughts or episodes of recurring panic, methods employing natural anxiety relief can be quite effective. In this first of two articles I'll begin to lay out why.

I'll also be discussing the consequences that stress can have on feelings of anxiety as well as in the development of a dreaded panic attack. After looking into stress and its effects on well-being for a good 20 years I can tell you that it plays a much larger part in things than you might be aware of.

In the second article I'll detail a widely utilized, technique of natural anxiety relief that can be of great assistance with our usual, day to day anxiety producing events.

Alfred Cooley, a noted modern day investigator at the University of California, called stress, "The most widespread problem in America today." He also stated, "It is a major contributing factor in 100% of diseases. No one is immune."

How is it possible that the body's reaction to stress, which is in effect set up for our safety, could be implicated in making us more anxious even to the point of generating a panic attack?

Let's take a quick look at some of the ways the body and more significantly the brain, responds to stress and at the ways in which the pervasive stress of modern day life can become a real cause of making us anxious, ill and preventing us from healing.

Simple Stress
Our Body is well equipped to cope with "simple" stress. Simple stress has a very definite beginning and end point. One great example is to imagine that you're making your way through the woods and come upon a bear. Your body activity immediately heightens to "fight or flight" mode so as to deal with the perceived threat.

You either do battle with the bear, or climb a tree, or run away. In either case, you have handled the perceived threat to your life. Now your body's physiology can go back to its baseline normal levels once more. This happens rather easily because the physical response of eluding the threat has used up a large part of the chemical and nutritive excess present because of the stress.

This is the classic stress response that the body is designed to produce and then dissipate. It's the normal part of our physiological make up.

Modern Day "Complex" Stress
"The human body was never meant to deal with prolonged, chronic stress." Pamela Peeke, University of Maryland.

Our current pace of life is considered to be much stressful than it was just a few decades ago. Studies show that on the job stress is higher than it has ever been and it's worsening. Our technological innovations, thought to be labor saving, have in actuality created even more stress. For most busy people it's as if the rat race continues 24 hours a day.

This never-ending exposure to low level stress creates the same response in the body and brain as the "bear in the woods" situation. Even though these are apparently small, low-level stressors, the same biochemical and neurological effects are triggered.

Difficulties often occur when these reactions aren't adequately discharged by fighting or fleeing before the next stressor presents itself. Give it some thought; it's fairly difficult to "burn off" all the chemicals as you sit at your desk or in the traffic jam in your car.

Scientists like to use the term "complex stress" for this phenomenon. It's like a chronic "fight or flight" state, with the same chemicals secreted, and specific parts of the brain alarmed, but held in place over time with very negative consequences:

The University College, London published findings in the journal Science (2007), demonstrating that when people experience daily, low-level stress, activity in the brain shifts from the frontal portion of the brain to the mid-brain.

The frontal region of the brain is where decision making and rationalization takes place. The mid-brain is the spot where survival instincts such as fight or flight originate from.

What this new research is revealing to us is that our mental activity in the midst of sustained stress has moved to the mid-brain, the "survival area", resulting in a heightened condition of fear and anxiety. In essence, you're like a walking panic attack just waiting to be ignited.

A separate, survival related, region of your brain has developed a sustained aggravated state resulting from the chronic stress and the fight or flight state which accompanies it. If a panic attack is triggered and an even more heightened state of fear comes into being, it is very difficult to calm yourself down.

Deep breathing and relaxation techniques frequently don't significantly help, because it is the brain activity that needs to be changed. It has to switch back into the more rational frontal lobe.

Here is where a quality, all natural anxiety relief program, designed to ease this shift, can be extremely effective and beneficial in calming the mind and in preventing future panic attacks. In fact, my examination indicates that programs of this design are rapidly becoming recognized as the method of choice in treating generalized anxiety and panic attacks.

To sum things up:
The chronic, low-level stress of modern day life can bring on a shift of brain activity into "survival mode" causing feelings of anxiety that may lead to an all-out panic attack.

During the panic attack your brain has shifted into panic mode. In order to restore calm, you have to be able to switch your mental activity from the survival area of your brain back into the rational part.

In Part Two of this series I'll discuss one very simple all natural anxiety relief method that can bring you out of the "fight or flight" state and back into the rational part of your brain easing the stress or perceived fear and restoring peace of mind.

Wildlife art prints

wildlife photography is considered by many as the most challenging genre of photography. It is not enough to be a technical expert in the mechanics of your camera, and have an artists' eye for composition and colour, you must also have the patience and tracking skills of a hunter in order to capture a wild animal in its natural state. Also, an extensive knowledge and understanding of an animal's behaviour and instincts can help to determine where to find it and accurately predict its actions. An amazing wildlife photograph is usually the result of hours of preparation, study, and the patience and knowledge that it takes to be in the right place at the right time.

There is no such thing as a typical day in the life of a wildlife photographer, as their profession requires them to travel far and wide to seek out their animal muse. The most dramatic of wildlife photos usually capture the subject in some form of action, such as eating, fighting, flying, or running. These types of images require a very fast shutter speed to capture the action without the final photograph turning out blurry. The photographer must have perfect timing to know the right moment to press the shutter button on the camera.

Many magazines, such as National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, and Nature's Best Photography Magazine are dedicated to featuring high quality wildlife photographs in their pages. Do you dare to go leopard? That is the question that has been going around town ever since animal print came back into the fashion world! Animal print skirts, shoes, bags, etc. has been seen in just about any department store you can think of. Timid, self cautious woman have transformed into sexy, bold, confident divas. Leopard print has been used for some time now but big time Hollywood stars have walked down the runway with this bad kitty look and got everyone going gaga for it once again! To understand leopard, we must understand who the animal really is and what it stands for. This beautiful creature believe it or not is the smallest of the four "big cats" which includes tigers, lions and jaguars. But its speed, agility and ferocity makes up for its lack in size. It has relatively short legs, large skull and a long body covered with rosettes. Rosettes are the rose-like marking or formations found on the fur and skin. The rosettes are used to camouflage the animal, either as a defense mechanism or as a stalking tool. Most leopards are yellowish tan with black spots. This is the one used in the fashion world today. But there are those leopards that are born all black but even they have rosettes. This ferocious animal knows what it wants and is not afraid to get it.

Green Printing Facts To Consider In Order To Pick A Good Environmentally Friendly Printing Company

Helping the environment is important to most people right now, and for those in business, what better way to help than to use an environmentally friendly printing service for all your business printing needs, whether it be for Business Cards, Brochures, Annual Reports, or just a simple Newsletter.

In the current market however, few printers can be classified as eco friendly printing companies, with the majority of still running print processes that involve the use of plate developing and press chemicals.

To help identify a good quality environmentally aware printing company the following provides some basic factors worth considering.

1. Eco Print Policy

Does the printing company have an environmental policy? If they do it should be available either through their website, in PDF format, or via email. A good eco print policy will set out how the company approaches ongoing assessment around the methods of eco friendly production and working practices, but will also set out specifics in the following areas.

2. Eco Friendly Paper

Is the printer FSC and PEFC Certified. This in itself confirms that the printing company prints on materials harvested through the sustainable management of forests. The FSC chain of custody tracks FSC certified material from the forest to the consumer, right the way through the production process.

Does the printing company recycle 100% of paper waste? Do they continually monitor machine set up sheets to ensure an ongoing reduction in press waste?

Apart from what inks are used in the process, have you ever considered the amount of ink a particular Typeface will use. Well a Dutch company called Spranq has developed a font called the ‘Ecofont™'. It may be worth asking your printer how and if this font would be usable for your particular print job. The font basically has circles left blank in the middle of each letter reducing ink usage by up to 25%, but whilst maintaining readability.

3. Environmentally Friendly Inks

A good eco friendly printer will be using vegetable based inks instead of inks that are oil based. With modern day 10 colour presses using vegetable inks check to see if the Inkline or similar system is in use. This can reduce the press ink that gets wasted by around 90%. Eco friendly printers will have the contaminated nozzles for the print cartridges recycled after use.

4. Printing Plates and Chemicals for Developing

Look for a printing company who have invested in process free plate making. This process allows the plates to develop on the printing press, and eradicates the need for all developing or fixing agents. With this process 100% of the aluminium plates can be recycled.

5. Chemicals Used On The Printing Press

Environmentally friendly printing companies will have eradicated most press chemicals, or they will have found environmentally friendly alternatives. Where alcohol free printing has not been fully implemented, low alcohol fountain solution is used which reduces alcohol usage to a very small percentage. Low alcohol fountain solution was specifically developed for medium to large sheet fed presses to reduce the alcohol usage, which in turn reduces harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

6. Rags and Plastic In The Printing Process

When assessing your choice of Eco Printing Company, ask them what they do about plastic pallet wrapping and pallet strapping which represents the majority of the plastic a print company has to deal with. As with contaminated ink nozzles, all other plastic will be recycled by an environmentally responsible printing company.

Worth questioning is what materials are used for cleaning of the presses. Paper wipes can not be recycled if contaminated with even the smallest amount of chemicals. Eco friendly printers will be using rags that they will have collected and laundered for reuse on an ongoing basis.

With adherence to the above practices a good Eco Print company will be able to reduce their possible landfill waste by 80% or more in comparison to other printers, so if you wish to help the environment, invest in green printing solutions by using an eco friendly printing company.

Where can I go to have a family tree printed and framed?

Recently I've done a lot of geneaology and my grandad has been really interested in it and been asking lots of questions. It's his 70th birthday coming up and I thought it would be nice to have his family history professionally printed and framed but I can only seem to find US sites that do this. I want somewhere in the UK!

Can I use duct tape to seal packages sent through the USPS?

I'm planning to send a package from my home in South Carolina to a friend who lives all the way in Hawaii. I have a box to ship it in, and am going to print my shipping label and pay for shipping online from the USPS website, but I was wondering if it's acceptable if I use duct tape to seal the box? I've been looking around online and have seen some people say yes and some say no. Have any of you ever done this? Thanks!

The US Postal Service is not a fan of duct tape. It tends to leave behind adhesive residue on their equipment.

I have sent at least a dozen parcels over the past few years using duct tape.
